OLD COACH ROAD
TOKAANU TO WAIOURU
REQUEST FOR METALLING
A request for support in urging the Minister of Public Works and Minis- - ter of Employment to establish a roadmaking camp on the old coach road between Tokaanu and Waiouru, early next summer, with a view to havine the road metalled, was received from the Upper Waikato and Tongariro Anglers' Club at a meeting of the council of the Automobile Association last evening.
In a letter, the president of the club, Mr. L. Hanlon. said the club was very desirous of making available more angling water in the Upper Waikato River, owing to congestion on the present portion. This could not be done effectively until the old coach ro&d was metalled. In its present state it was a trap to motorists as one day's rain rendered it irr\passable. Apart from the Access metallfng would give to anglers, it would give southern touring motorists a short cut to the thermal regions.
The touring manager, Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, Baid the distance to be metalled would be about 40 miles. The metalling would provide an all-weather road of considerable importance to travellers between the districts in the vicinity of Palmerston North, Fielding and Taihape in the south, and the northern areas of Taupo and JRotorua, Matamata and the Bay of Plenty. Consideration of the request was deferred, pending the receipt of a full report from the touring manager.
