EFFECT OF THE SUBSIDY AUCKLAND TOTAL £822,780 OVER £250,000 IN WAGES • There should be considerable activity in the building trade in Auckland during the next few months if all the • work specified in the applications made for the Unemployment Hoard's building subsidy is proceeded with. The compilation' of the final Auckland figures was completed yesterday, and it was then revealed that the total value of the work contemplated had reached the aggregate of £822,780. There were 1616 applications, and it was estimated that the labour cost would absorb £257,769, while the subsidy to be paid would amount to £95,065.

Many of those who .were desirous of taking advantage of the subsidy left their applications until the last few days and there was a rush when it became known that applications would close on Tuesday afternoon. For the last three days to 4.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 582 applications were recoived at the Auckland office of tho board, the value of the buildings totalling £361,020. Under the applications, numerous sjhall jobs invoh ing alterations and additions to existing buildings were specified, but the total amount of £822,780 included 352 dwellings, ranging from modest cottages costing from £350, better types of houses with a value from £7OO to £IOOO, to more pretentious homes costing as much as £2500. There was a heavy rush of applications for the Unemployment Board's building subsidy at the Hamilton office of the Labour Department before the scheme closed yesterday. The number of applications received to date is 267, representing £85,184 in the value of building work to be done. The value of the labour is estimated at £24,099, on which £10,098 will be granted as subsidy. Included in the proposed buildings are 103 dwellings. In the final three days no fewer than 245 applications were lodged, the work represented being valued at £97,000. The total number of applications received was 815. The board has so far approved of work being undertaken in 437 cases in the Dunedin district. The buildings to be erected include 214 new houses.
