THE CITY MARKETS BETTER DEMAND FOR APPLES SOME LINES DEARER Larger supplies of oranges were available ab the City Markets yesterday, and there was a ready sale at slightly lower rates. Hipo bananas remained somewhat scarce, prices being steady. Demand for apples and pears showed an improvement and highor prices wero realised by some lines, particularly Delicious. There wero very heavy supplies of cauliflowers; which sold at lower rates. Cabbages, which did not offer so freely, improved in prico. Fairly heavy consignments of new potatoes came forward from North Auckland districts, and values fell by about id a lb. A fair demand was maintained for onions, but kumaras wero slow of sale. Good quality pumpkins sold at higher rates. Parsnips and rhubarb were in short supply. La to rates ruled for poultry, which was in average supply. Values tor eggs wero unchanged. HIDES AND SKINS SLIGHT EASING IN PRICES STEADY RATES FOR TALLOW Values for hides were a shade easier at the fortnightly auction held by Auckland brokers yesterday. Best grades of ox and cow hides were lowei 1 - by about id a lb., and calfskins by about 2d a lb. A fair demand was maintained for eheepskins, which sold at late rates. Tallow prices wero unchanged. TALLOW MARKET &JIET SLOW CONDITIONS IN FRUIT The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated August 19, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London: — Tallow.—Tho market continues quiet, •with values nominally unchanged. Hemp.—Tho Manila market is easier, but steadier at the close. "K" grade for August-October shipment sold at £ls 10s. Output from January 1 to July 31, 620,000 bales, against 519,000 for same period last year. Stocks in tho United Kingdom at July 31, 11,764 bales, against 27,842 bales same time last year. Stocks in Manila at July 31, 118,000 bales, against 135,000 at same time last year.^ The Sisal market is steady. No. 1 for September-November shipment quoted sellers £lB 2s 6d. Tho Now Zealand market is unchanged. Stocks in London at July 31, 111 tons, against 125 tons samo time last year. Eggs.—Tho market is very firm and tho outlook is promising. Limited, Hamilton, reports on the Uhaupo horso sale held on Monday as follows :-~There w»s a good yarding of horses of good class, but owing to the incessant rai n throughout the sale the yarding* waa affected.
