PETROL FROM COAL

NEW PLANT IN ENGLAND OUTLAY OF £2,500,000 Dotails of a big now plant for making petrol from coal, which is to be built by Imperial Chemical Industries at Billingham-on-Tcos, Durham, been given by Sir Harry McGowan, chairman of tho company. Tho building of tho plant has been mado possible by tho -decision of tho Government to guarantee a preference of at least 4d a gallon to British-produced petrol. Sir Harry McGowan said that Imporial Chemical Industries have conducted research on tho hydrogenation of coal, tar, and other materials for six years. In view of tho Government's undertaking the directors had authorised a scheme for tho erection of a largo commercial plant at tho company's works, Billingham, where special facilities aro available. "An initial output of 100,000 tons a yoar of- first-grade petrol is aimed at by processing 490 tons of coal a day, and using altogether about 1000 tons a day of coal," Sir Harry added. "The operation of tho plant will give permanent direct employment to 2500 miners and other workers, as well as much indirect employment. "Tho construction of the plant itself, estimated to tako about one and a-half years, will call for much activity in tho iron and steel and heavy industries. Seven thousand men will find direct employment during this period, and it is expected that there will be indirect employment for a further 5000 men. Tho necessary new capital of about £2,500,000 will be furnished by Imperial Chemical Industries, Limited, . from their own resources, which aro ample for tho enterprise, and tho general business of tho company."
