ICY ROAD CAUSES SKID
MOTOR-CAR OVERTURNS INJURIES TO OCCUPANT [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday Chest injuries were received by Mr. E. Clark, of Manutahi, last night, and three others had a narrow escape when an open touring car, driven by Mr. .T. Couch, of Manutahi, overturned on lillecrap's Hill, near Hawera, owing to ice on the road. The road where the mishap occurred does not dry during the day, and last night was covered with a quarter of an inch of ice. The party was returning to Manutahi from Hawera at about 10 o'clock when the car skidded on the ice, and, although the driver took it into the watertable, it somersaulted, coming to rest on its side. Mr. Clark's injuries necessitated his admittance to the Hawera Hospital. Numerous minor accidents occurred on this hill last winter, and improvements to the road have been undertaken. Even pedestrians were falling on the road last night. In order to protect pedestrians and vehicular traffic cn the south side of High Street in Hawera on frosty mornings, the Hawera Borough Council has found it necessary to sprinkle the road surface with sand.
