ART UNION MONEY

SAILORS' HOME BENEFITS SUM OF £SOO GRANTED "I do not object to accepting the money, even if it does come from an art union," said Mr. It. T. Michaels, retiring president of the Auckland Sailors' Home, in mentioning at the annual meeting last evening that £SOO had been granted by the Government to the home from the proceeds of a recent art union. Mr. Michaels stressed the low level to which the finances had fallen and expressed appreciation of the "timely gift of £250 from the King George's Fund for Sailors, London, and the donation of £SOO made by the Government. "We are not like some other bodies, which have turned down art union money, even if it would be in the interests of the work of their organisations to accept it," said Mr. Michaels. "I believe that, whatever our individual ideas are, when money is offered for work like ours it is our duty to accept it." The Hon. J. Trevethick, M.L.C.: Our real objection was that we did not receive £IOOO instead of £SOO. (Laughter) . "I thoroughly endorse Mr. Michaels' sentiments that we, as a body doing charitable work, acted rightly in agreeing to take this art union money," said the Hon. C. J. Carrington, M.L.C. "This money was a real godsend to us in view of the difficult times through which we were passing. I hope when we meet again next year we will be 'able to record blessings such as we have had during the past 12 months."
