EXPRESS ARRIVES LATE

LOCAL TRAIN NOT CLEAR SLIPPERY RAILS CAUSE DELAY [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, -Wednesday The ordinary express from Auckland arrived at Thorndon this morning two hours behind schedule time. The delay was due partly to exceptionally heavy holiday traffic, but mainly to an earlier train, outward bound, failing to negotiate the Khandallah Hill because of the slippery rails. The express from Auckland was due at Thorndon at 7.42 a.m., but when Palmerston North was reached it had lost 17 minutes through heavy traffic at a number of stations. The train continued its journey with a full load, carrying 14 carriages and a van. A further delay occurred as a result of the 8.18 a.m. train from Wellington to Palmerston North experiencing difficulty on the way to Khandallah. Wet weather had made the rails very slippery and, although carrying its ordinary load, the train had to be divided into two sections, each being taken up separately. The Auckland express arrived at Thorndon' at 9.40. The limited was about 13 minutes behind time.
