SUBURBAN BOROUGHS

FIVE MAYORS UNOPPOSED SOME COUNCILS COMPLETED KEEN CONTESTS ELSEWHERE The re-election unopposed of five retiring Majors was a feature revealed by tho closing of nominations yesterday for the municipal elections in Auckland suburban districts, They are: Mr. S. Donaldson (Newmarket), Mr. I. J. Goldstino (One Tree Hill), Mr. H. F. Mcikle (Devonport), Mr. G. Mills (Birkenhead) and Mr. G. Lawson (New Lynn). There will be straight-out contests for tho mayoralties of Mount Eden and Takapuna; in both cases tho retiring Mayor is a candidate. At Mount Albert and Oneliunga the retiring Mayors are each confronted with two rivals. Nominations ia the cases of Otahuhu and Northcote do not close until to-day. However, at Otahuhu Mr. H. T. Clements, retiring Mayor, already has an opponent in Mr. C. R. Petrie. No nomination has been received at Northcote, where it is anticipated the retiring Mayor, Mr. R. Martin, will have a "walk over." There will be no council elections at Newmarket, One Tree Hill and Oneliunga, jvljile the possibility of avoiding an election at New Lynn is believed to exist, although s'even nominations have been received for the six vacancies. The keenest council election will apparently be at Mount Eden, where there are 24 candidates, representing two complete tickets, for tho 12 seats. At Mount Albert the issue almost resolves itself into a Labour challenge against iiitting members. Fairly keen rivalry is indicated at Devonport, Birkenhead and Takapuna, where the nominations number respectively 13, 17 and 14 for the nine seats on each council.

In the following list of nominations sitting members are indicated by an asterisk, while Labour aspirants at Mount Albert are denoted by L:— MOUNT ALBERT

UNUSUAL POSITION NEW LYNN ELECTIONS POLL FOR POWER BOARD SEAT An unusual position, which may result in there being an election only to choose a representative for the Waiter inata Power Board, has arisen in connection with the forthcoming municipal elections at New Lynn. The present Mayor, Mr. G. Lawson, is the only nominee for that office, and is thus re-elected. Seven nominations have been received for the six vacancies on the Borough Council, but two candidates have offered to withdraw, to avoid an election. The matter will be mutually arranged among the candidates. For one seat on the Wai tenia tn Power Board, however, two ftominations have been received, those of Messrs. 11. Wright, the sitting member, and the Rev. W. Rankin, an exmember. Unless one of the two candidates withdraws, an election will be necessary for the one seat, although the Mayor and the council will be returned without being taken.
