| CONTESTS IN THE CITY TWO MAYORAL CANDIDATES ASPIRANTS FOR THE COUNCIL FORTY-THREE NOMINATIONS No real surprises were provided when nominations closed at noon yesterday for the Mayoralty of Auckland and tho City Council. As in 1931 the Mayoralty contest will be between Mr. G. TV. Hutchison, who is completing his first term in office, and Mr. H. G. R. Mason, the ■official Labour candidate. Forty-three candidates are contesting 21 seats on the council. The number in 1931 was 37, while in 1929 tho record number of 67 was reached. Eighteen of the present members will recontest their seats. The three not standing again are Messrs. F. N. Bartram, H. It. Jenkins and J. Robertson. The Labbur Party is running a i< ticket " of 17 candidates for the council. So far no indication has been given that any other organisation is actively sponsoring candidates, apart from the fact that 15 of the retiring members have intimated that, having asked the Mayor to seek re-election, they are also offering their services. The three members not associated in that movement are Mr. B. Martin and Mr. E. J. Phelan, official Labour candidates, and Mr. T. Bloodworth, * who may bo described as Independent Labour. The election will take place on Wednesday, May 3, and it has been decided to revert to the cross system of voting.
