WORK OF GOVERNMENT

COPING WITH PROBLEMS REVIEW BY MR. COATES [BY TELKGBArH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] PAPAROA, Wednesday Steps taken by the Government to adjust the economic position of the Dominion were briefly reviewed by the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, in an address to a large meeting of his constituents in the Garrison Hall yesterday afternoon. Mr. F. Cullen, of Maungaturoto, presided. Mr. Coates said he was glad of the opportunity of discussing political questions. Not only were all experts on political and financial matters concerned with the problems which faced the nation, but the problems vitally affected the people. New Zealand had gained a name for sound financial standing, and this must be maintained. To this the Government was pledged from the time the people placed it in power. Although it was desirable to balance the Budget, Mr. Coates said he did not favour doing so at too severe a cost to the people. They might balance the Budget and end with every man "on the flat of his back." Finances must be arranged so as to give the citizens a chance of making good.

Mr. Coates ihen dealt with economies effected by tho Coalition Government.

The Minister addressed a meeting at Ruawai in the evening. The hall was crowded and he received an attentive hearing.
