VAVAU ISLAND VISITED

THE VICE-REGAL CRUISE BEAUTY OF THE SCENERY CORDIAL NATIVE RECEPTION (Dy Radio. —Special to Press Association') H.M.S. DIOMEDE, April 10 A visit to Vavau Island was made by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and Lady Bledisloe yesterday. H.M.S. Diomede entering the harbour in the morning. Conditions wore ideal throughout the day and a good opportunity was afforded to explore what is recognised as the most beautiful island of tho Tongan group. Many charming scenes greeted tho Vice-Regal party as the warship steamed up the harbour to tho town of Neiafu, which is the port and residence of tho Governor. The town is beautifuljy situated, overlooking tho harbour, and has quite a modern appearance. A cordial reception was extended to the visitors by chief, local residents and hundreds of natives, who were in picturesque attire. Characteristic songs and dances were given with all the charm and grace of the liehthearted native islanders, their delightful entertainment lasting for some hours.

Launch excursions were made to Swallow Cave, on the coast of Kapa Island. This lovely spot is famous and the visitors were thrilled by unique experiences.

Their Excellencies were entertained at dinner by the officers of the Diomcde, who welcomed their guests with diverting kava ceremonies. Dinner was followed by amateur theatricals, in which topical sketches of highly amusing descriptions were presented.

The Diomedo left Vavau at seven this morning, and is due at Samoa to-morrow.
