BOWLING NOTES

EASTER TOURNAMENT WINNERS OF VARIOUS SECTIONS HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY BY SKIP Section play was complotod in tho different Easter events of tho Auckland Bowling Contro after a highly successful three days' play. Weather and green conditions materially assisted to this end. Tho form shown by tho majority of tho players was, as is usual at this stage of tho season, distinctly good. Tho new competition, tho junior fours, provided much enjoyment for tlio competitors. Tho executive fours and the first-year players' competitions also gave the usual satisfaction to tho participants.. Out of tho ranks of tho strong teams competing in section A in tho Easter fours there came only one winner, Carter, Carlton, who was fully expected to qualify. Notnblo failures in the section were Muston, Bremner and Higginbotham. Tho first-named just missed by one win. Bremner's failure was a distinct surpriso considering tho calibre of his combination. Higginbotham did not show up as well as ho has been doing lately. Tho Grey -Lvnn team skipped by Prince made a good showing, counting Bremner's team among tho victims. Section B brought forth three winners. Lancaster was expected to qualify, but Kelly, Balmoral, and Clarke, West End, were surprises. Sumner, Pukekohe, gave a disappointing return of three wins. Daisley, Mount Eden, and Uren, Remuera, wore well up in the section. Section C was won with eight wins, two teams, Hosking, Pukekohe, and Ball, Carlton, qualifying. Ball unfortunately was indisposed on the last day, S. .Tenkin substituting, while the skip position was filled by M. Elliott, who formerly played number three. The new skip gave a sound display in a position 110 does not really like. Hosking's team played fine bowls until tho last day when it fell away slightly. Surprise Showing De Launay and Walker justified a prior selection in section D, each notching eight wins. Hosking, Grey Lynn, just failed to qualify. Ramsey, Balmoral, did not get as far as usual in open events. A surpriso showing was that of Osborne, Waitemata, who went through with only one win. Koir, Onehunga, was also disappointing. 111 section E Russell and Livingstone came through, each sustaining only one loss. Surprising failures were Whittle and Keatloy. It is a long time since the first-named finished so much out of the running. The-only win of Westbrooke, Ellerslie, was secured at Keatley's expense. Roberts, Balmoral, showed good form to win section F outright. Jury, Ponsonby, with Parsons assisting, just failed to qualify. The veteran Wakerley was well up with six wins. McMaster, Stanley, did not meet with his usual success. Buckley, Grey Lynn, secured eight wins in section G. Dick, Ponsonby, must be congratulated 011 his performance of eight wins. Allely, Mount Albert, finished with six wins, but was expected to do better. The Hikurangi team's return of five wins was good for a country combination. In section A of the executive fours, two good showings wero those of R. Thomas, Mount Albert, and Pearce, Rooky Nook. Pilkington, Te Papapa, was expected to do a little better. Blackwell, Waitemata, with six wins, was close to the leaders. Richmond's one win was really surprising for such a good skip. Good Performance Dr. K. S. Maeky registered an outright win with eight victories to his credit in section B. Considering it was his first time in charge of a team in an open tournament his performance was exceptionally good. Last season's winner, Armstrong, Pukekoho, failed to show up on this occasion. Fox, Glen Eden, J. Reid, St. Hcliers, and McDougall, Epsom, with six wins, each had good records. Melville, last season's runner-up in this event, failed badly, returning only four wins. The best performance in tho junior fours was registered by tho Waitemata team, skipped by Sampson. This team had the honour of being the only one to come through any of the four competitions without defeat. Sampson won tho first-year players' competition two years ago with almost tho same team. Smith's Rocky Nook team, which was in Sampson's section, had eight wins. The two other sections were each won with seven wins. Johnston, Carlton, was fully expected to do well, but Burrows, Pukekohe, was a surprise qualifier. Purdy, Balmoral, went very close with six wins. Winter, Grey Lynn, and Ellisdon,Devonport, were successful in tho third section with seven wins each. The lastnamed is a son of the well-known former Rockv Nook and now Devonport plaver, F. J.'H. Ellisdon. Jn the first-year players' fours, it was pleasing to note the success in one section of a team representing the newlyformed Kaukapakapa Club. Earle and his partners recently competed in the open one-day tournament at Auckland to gain experience. Devonport and Edendale supplied tho joint winners of the other section.
