ATTACK ON A LAUNCH SOUTH CHINA OUTRAGE EUROPEAN OFFICER SHOT OTHER CASUALTIES REPORTED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received April 17, 11.15 p.m.) HONGKONG, April 17 A Chinese Customs launch struck a mudbank at low tido early this morning on Pang Chong Island, 15 miles off Macao, on the Canton River. The launch was attacked by pirates, who shot a European officer, Mr. E. Pearce. Tho chief officer is missing and it is believed that another officer, Mr. Baldwin, died of wounds. A Chinese engineer and a boatman both were injured. The launch is missing. Mr. Baldwin formerly was in the British Navy and was light-weight boxing champion of tho China Fleet.
