INCREASE IN BETTING

WIN AND PLACE SYSTEM INVESTMENTS AT ELLERSLIE The popularity of the win and place system of betting was again illustrated at the Ellerslie races yesterday, when a remarkably large increase in totalisator turnover was recorded. Investments totalled £43,791, an increase of £12,987 30s, or 42 per cent, compared with the coi responding day last year, making a total for the meeting of £82,678, an increase of £17,829 10s, or 27 per cent. Easter Monday last year was wet, wbich would account in some measure for the increase of 4500 in yesterday's attendance, 16,500, and the consequent increase in the volume of speculation. Owing to the two-horse field in the Great Northern St. Leger Stakes the totalisator showed a decrease of £2289 on the first race, but in the next race this was turned into an increase, which was swelled as the programme progressed. The place machino handled nearly twice as much as the win machine.
