LAKE PUPUKE WATER
THE NORTHCOTE SUPPLY FILTRATION EXPERIMENT A fair measure of success has attended the temporary purification process adopted by the Northcote Borough Council's waterworks engineer, Mr. J. Williamson, at the intake at Lake Pupuke. Prior to the water being pumped into the rising main for delivery to the reservoir, it is filtered by being run through a fiumo in which are placed beds of coke and carbon and three screens, two being 1600 mesh to the square inch and the third 3600 mesh. The water is then aerated by causing it to fall on to a baffle beforo passing into a tank, from which it is pumped. The reservoir was cleaned out during the week and this will be done again in about three weeks' time. Tbe deadends of mains are scoured daily. Mr. Williamson proposes to uso granulated carbon for the filtration experiment as soon as he can obtain a supply. But for the fact that storage must be maintained for fire-fighting purposes, he would prefer not to keep any large quantity of water in the reservoir, as he considers that the water is better delivered direct into the mains from the pumps.
