BAND CONTEST
SOUTH AUCKLAND UNION SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY [from our own* correspondent] HAMILTON, Saturday After an interval of 25 years, during which no similar event has been held in Hamilton, the first competition of the South Auckland Band Contest Union was commenced at Rugby Park to-day. Twelve bands and 300 bandsmen are competing in the various events. In the afternoon there was an attendance of the public estimated to be between 4000 and 5000. Although conditions were at times threatening tho weather was fine throughout. Before proceeding to Rugby Park the bands assembled at tho Drill Hall and marched down Victoria Street. On arrival at the park they were welcomed by tiie chairman of tho Banc! Contest Union, Mr. J. R. Fow, and the Mayor of Hamilton, Dr. F. D. Pinfold. During the afternoon the B and C grade quickstep competitions were decided. At the conclusion of these events tho massed bands played tlie wellknown march, "invereargill." in the evening the competitions for the test selections were decided. The competition for solos and quartettes will be held in tho Winter Show buildings on Monday. Among the visitors to the contest are Mr. H. D. Bennett, president of- tho New Zealand Bauds' Association, tho secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. G. Osborne, and a member of the executive, Mr. 11. Patchctt. At the conclusion of the afternoon's programme the judge, Mr G. BuckJoy, of Auckland, addressed tho assembled bands and said that ho was sure that, in tho near future South Auckland would bo capable of producing the best band in New Zealand. There had been somo excellent playing in the march competitions, which were very difficult for young players. At the end of his address ho asked the bands to bow in tribute to the men prominent in the world of band music who had died recently. The results of the events were as follows: C. "Homo Again" (Vincent Turner), maximum points, 300. —Cambridge Municipal Band, 239£ points, 1; Pukekohe, 225J points, 2; Whakatane, 223 points, 3; Ngaruawahia, 4; Morrinsvillo, 5. .13 Grade Quickstep, Test March, "Knight of the Road" (J. A. Greenwood), maximum points, 300. —Waikato Regimental and Hamilton Municipal Band. 255 points, 1; To Aroha, 2; Tc Awainutu, 3; Tauranga, -1; Rotorua, 5; Waihi, 6; To Awainutu, 7. C Grade Selection, "Convivial Songs" (Rimmcr).—Cambridge, 138 points, 1; Whakatane, 137 points, 2; Pukekolie, 136 points, 3. B Grade Selection, "A Souvenir of the Opera" (Rimmcr). —Rotorua, 147 points, 1; Waikato Regimental, 144 points, 2; Tauranga, 143 points, 3. Aggregate of points for music.— B grade: Rotorua, 230 points, 1; Waikato Regimental, 228 points, 2; Waihi and Tauranga, 224 points each, 3. C grade: Whakatane, 217 points, 1; Cambridge, 215 points, 2; Ngaruawahia, 214 points, 3.
