TWO CHARGES DENIED
FAILURE OF PROSECUTION [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Thursday In the Magistrate's Court, Albert J. Brown pleaded not guilty to a charge of issuing a double chart and also to a charge of aiding and abetting Joe Plamus to carry on the business of a bookmaker. Police evidence was to the effect that defendant introduced a constable to Plamus with whom a bet was made on a double chart. The constable saw defendant with a chart, but he refuted to show it to him. The constable won his bet and was entitled to draw £2O. .Defendant, it was alleged, had promised that if the horses won he would pay out. When the constable went to collect, defendant refused to pay, and said that it was nothing to do with him. Joe Plamus admitted that he had made the bet with the constable, and soon after it was made he had suspicions that he had betted with a constable, so he went to Whakatane. Witness stated that the defendant had nothing to do with the transaction, nor had any commission been paid to him for introducing people who wished to make bets.. Defendant made a complete denial of the charges preferred against him. The magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, dismissed both charges.
