BOOKMAKER FINED £250

CASE AT ROTORUA PREVIOUS PENALTIES COMMENTS BY MAGISTRATE [by telegraph OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Thursday A fine of £250 was imposed on Hori Mau, who appeared in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court to-day on a charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Senior-Sergeant Carroll said that on February 11, a. constable on special duty met defendant and asked to be accommodated with bets on two horses running in events at the Rotorua races. These were made at 10s each. Betting slips were handed to the constable and the transaction was completed. Half an hour later, the defendant's suspicions being aroused, he followed the constable, asked for the slips to be returned and told him the bet was off. Defendant had afterwards admitted his guilt to the police and had given them no troublo in the matter. Counsel for defendant said that since the win and place totalisator had come into vogue betting of the nature referred to had become negligible. His client had always acted honourably in his transactions and had paid his debts. There was no suggestion against him of "welshing." The magistrate, Mr. S. L. Paterson, said that although defendant had been in Court on other occasions for similar offences and had been fined heavily he had acted in defiance of the law. He must have found it a very profitable business in the past, in spite of the fines that had been imposed. Defendant was convicted and fined £250, one month being allowed for payment. Default was fixed at six months' imprisonment.
