"PIRATING" OF COLOURS

BLAZERS AND BADGES OBJECTIONS OF CONFERENCE FORM OF PROTECTION SOUGHT [BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday Strong objections were raised last evening at a meeting of representatives of school and other organisations in all parts of New Zealand, including the university colleges, to the "pirating" by unauthorised persons of blazers and badges. It was decided to tfcko stops to secure, if possible, sonic form of protective legislation against the abuse. Speakers said each school took a pride in its own colours, and it was painful to see unauthorised persons wearing them. Others said it was difficult to see how blazers could be protected, but the badges should be. Dr. Bennett described the efforts of Nelson College to obtain protection for its colours. The College of Heralds had stated that it knew of no method of obtaining protection for school colours, or of preventing manufacturers from making or individuals from wearing school blazers. The nearest they could get to it was by the registration of a badge as coat of arms, which meant nothing more than that particular coat |of arms would not be registered for i any other corporate body. 'Phe motion carried was:—"That I this meeting of delegates, representing i many university colleges, colleges, and secondary schools of the Dominion, is definitely of the opinion that the Legislature should extend some measure of statutory protection, with appropriate penalties for infringement, to the distinctive badges of university colleges, colleges, and secondary schools, and of incorporated associations, particularly those associations connected with educational institutions."
