ATTEMPTED ROBBERY

MAN WITH REVOLVER VISIT PAID TO STORE [by TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] DUNEDIN, Tuesday It is reported that an attempt at robbery under arms was made on Mr. P. 8. , Grant's store at Puerua, South Otago, about three o'clock on Monday morning. In answer to knockings on the door of his residence, Mr. Grant rose, and after partially dressing, opened the door, when he was confronted by a man who asked if he could be supplied with petrol for his- car. The man was muffled up about the face so as to completely conceal his -' features. Mr, Grant was proceeding to obtain the petrol when the intruder produced a revolver, and dazzling him* with a powerful torch, demanded the kevs of the safe. Mr. Grant promptly knocked the .man's hand aside, and dashed into the house to obtain a weapon. The intruder then retired hurriedly. Mr. Grant communicated with the police at Balclutha, and Constable Boyle later saw a car enter the town from a southerly direction, but was unable to take its number. Mr. Grant. also found that his own motor-car had been tampered with, making an immediate pursuit impossible. It was also reported to the police later in the morning that a motor-car had been removed from Mr. Crutchley's garage at Rosebank, the night. The car was found near the railway station undamaged and with some petrol still remaining in it. ..
