THE HOLIDAY SEASON
IDEAL WEATHER CONTINUES MANY SPORTING ATTRACTIONS j :.( Although the majority of workers had to return to duty yesterday, beaches and sports attractions were well patronised and, under the influence of ideal summer weather, there was a general holiday spirit in the city. At Ellerslie racecourse, where the second day's programme of 1 the ' AucklandRacing Club's Summer Meeting was held, there was a large crowd, while the Auckland Tennis Association's annual handicap tournament at the Stanley Street courts also attracted many spectators. Other major sports eventis were the Auckland Bowling Centre's Christmas tournament and country week cricket at the Domain. Transport services were again busily occupied throughout the day. Only two express trains to Wellington were run by the Railway Department, and both were well patronised. Excursions by steamer and launch to the islands in the gulf were popular, and large crowds, travelled by ferry to the North Shore beaches. Although the tides were not very suitable for afternoon or late morning bathing, there were also large numbers of people at Mission Bay, Kohimarama, St. Heliers Bay and Point Cihevalier beaches. The SheKy .Beach and Point Resolution baths were crowded during most of the day. To-day's attractions will include the second clay's .programme of the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting at Epsom, the continuance of country week cricket at the Domain, and inter-section play in the Auckland Bowling Centre's Christmas tournament.
