QUEEN STREET ACCIDENT
INJURIES TO PEDESTRIAN STRUCK BY MOTOR-CAR A visitor from London, Mr. Robert Dudley Walrond, was struck by a runaway motor-car at the intersection of Queen and Shortland Streets at about 4.40 p.m. yesterday. He was thrown into the air, and fell on the roadway, just clear of the wheels of the car. Mr. Walrond received head injuries and concussion and was removed to the Auckland Hospital by a St. John ambulance. Subsequently he was transferred to a private hospital, and at a late hour last evening it was. reported that his condition was not serious. The motor-car, a large sedan, was being driven down Shortland Street when it got out of fcontrol and gathered speed on tlie steep slope. Before it reached Queen Street, the driver, Mr. J. Martyn Wilson, of Berauora, endeavoured to turn the car and avoid pedestrians who were crossing the intersection, but the car struck Mr. Walrond, who was walking near the centre of the road. Mr. Walrond Was tossed high into the air and foil heavily on the traffic dome marking the middle of the intersection.
The car crossed Queen Street and struck an electric fuse hox on the kerb near the corner of Queen and Swanson Streets. The vehicle came to rest on the footpath alongside the Royal Insurance Building.
Neither Mr. Wilson nor Mrs. Wilson, who was a passenger in the car, was injured, and the vehicle was only slightly damaged. Mr. Walrond, who is 55 years of age, is a London business man and is touring New Zealand with his wife. They have been_ in the Dominion only a few weeks and travelled to Auckland from Rotorua yesterday afternoon.
