MORE MEN FOR LAND.
UNEMPLOYMENT POLICY READY FOR BETTER TIMES EARLY IMPROVEMENT DUE [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRES'PONDENT] GISBORNE, Wednesday It is the intention of the Unemployment Board to divert all labour possible, in districts such as Gisborne, to primary productive work in order to prepare for a change in the produce markets, which is believed to be not very far off. A statement to this effect was made to-day by Mr. J. S. Jessep, deputy-chairman of the board. Mr. Jessep said that in endeavouring to divert all possible labour to productive work in areas where the whole life of the district depended on maintaining the productive power of the land, he did not necessarily mean the placing of more men in camps. A larger proportion of men was engaged in primary productive work in the Gisborne district . than in most other places, but to prevent the land from going back too far, or, better still, to retain its productive capacity to the full, it would be wise for farmers to be ready for a change in the markets, when it comes.
Discussing, present conditions, Mr. Jessep said he believed the time for a change was not very far off. According to reports, there was a more cheerful atmosphere in tne United Kingdom. The primary - produce markets were little affected yet, but the markets for sterling, as they affected primary produce, appeared to be working in the right direction. He felt that a consolidation of the position would be noticed during the next few months. An improvement must come, and the trend of events appeared to be in this direction Australia, too, appeared to be very hopeful and a cheerful tone prevailed.
