TRIALS AT TAKANINI

PILLOW FIGHT'S PROGRESS VOITRE AS RIDER IN DERBY PALACE AND WEATHERWISE Fine weather and fast track conditions gavo trainers an opportunity to send their charges along at Tukanini yesterday. A lot of useful work was performed on the inner grass and plough tracks, the poles being out about a dozen feet on the inside grass. Principal (Jones) led Imperial Prince (Gilmer) over six furlongs in 1.19 3-5, both horses working freely. Principal has hardened up ns a result of his racing at Takapuna. F. Smith may nice both his charges over hurdles at the summer meetings. Gold Pocket (Taylor) was a neck in front of Expectancy (Foa.rn) at the end of half a mile in 50 l-ss. Gold Pocket continues to do nicely and there lias been a noticeable improvement in Expectancy's recent form. Helium (Clrice) and Kind Words (Taylor) were on terms over six furlongs in 1.21 3 5. The recent form of these two has not been encouraging and they will need careful placing to pay their way. Greek Gold (Gilmer) and Holly Lu (Jones) beat Exaggeration (Fearn) over five furlongs in 1.1 1-5. The first two were both pulling at the end. but Exaggeration was obviously loafing. All three are in nice order for Christmas racing. Tavern Knight (Manson) and Great Emblem (Wynd) ran half a mile in 53 3-5. The two-year-old, who was going at his leisure, looks better for his race at Takapuna. Great Emblem worked lazily, but he is in good condition and is improving steadily.

Alignment (McFarlane) eased up noticeably at the end of half a mile in 51s. This colt looks really well and will improve on his Musket Stakes showing the first time he is produced at his best. Palace (Craig) and Weatherwise (Gray) were on terms over half a mil© in -ids, a good etlort when it is considered that both weie going comfortably at the end. Weatherwise luts an engagement ill the maiden race at Taumaiunui, but at present lie is regarded as a doubtful starter. Lord Willonyx (Fearn) was too good for Marmorate (Fursyth) over live furlongs in 1.4. Lord Willonyx worked freely and appeal's to be at lus best, but Alarmorate's effort was not out of the ordinary. The Lueullus filly (Clifford) was in front of the disc when Kereatu (Gilmer) and the Potoa gelding (Gray) jumped away at the three lurlongs, Kereatu finishing just in front in 37 3-5. The unequal start prevented a true indication of merit being obtained, but Kereatu showed his usual ability to begin fast and appears to be thriving well. On the plough Gay Marigold (Moore) did solid work to sprint home from the two furlongs disc in 2G 2-ss. She has freshened up well after a course of physic and is expected to show her best form at Christmas. Speedmint and Koyal Artist did some strong work on the plough, going at threequarter speed for the best part of a round. Both are looking fit after their spring racing. Pillow Fight (Gray) covered two circuits on the plough and came home the last three furlongs in 40s without being extended. In fact, he was pulling hard at the end. There is just a doubt whether the Night Raid gelding will be ready for his engagement in the Derby, as ho has not had any fast work recently. A better idea may be formed, however, from his work during the next fortnight. The leading rider, K. Voitre, has been engaged to ride Pillow Fight in tho Derby. Foulwind has not quite recovered from the injury received through running a nail info her foot at Durgaville, and J. L. Gray will not now have a representative at Taumnrunui. , , C. Morse is likely to attend the Taumarunui meeting and if present intentions are carried out he will take Lord Willonyx and Marmorate by train to-morrow. Arch Ruler is still doing easy work. but. he is noticeably sore and C. Morse may not overtax him while the tracks remain hard.

WORK AT R.ICCARTON CANDIDATES FOR ELLERSLIE GAY CREST AND TOUT LE MONDE [iJl* TEI.EG.RAPIX —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHUKCH, Tuesday The track work at Ricearlon to-d:iy was restricted owing to so many horses bavins raced at Ashburton on Saturday, and the only gallops of interest were those executed by some of the likely visitors to tho Auckland meeting, who were sent the reverse way. Jaloux was allotted a strong task over a mile and a-half on the plough, Azalea assisting over the last half of the journey. Jaloux was not galloped against the watch, but maintained an even pace, averaging slightly over 13s to tho furlong. Jaloux is undoubtedly in good order to carry out his fmui preparation for the Auckland Cup, for which ho is at present in strong public favour. Tho successful Riccarton light-weight horseman A. Eastwood has been engaged to ride him. Eastwood has won two New Zealand Cups and two years ago linislied first in the Auckland Cup on Gay Crest from Mo tore, but the positions were reversed. Shatter and Argemtic were companions in a useful gallop over six furlongs. They kepi, together throughout without being extended at any stage.

Gay Crest and Tout le Monde strode over seven furlongs on the trial grass, the first half taking 51 2-5s and the full journey 1.31. Gay Crest is carrying some surplus condition as a result of a fairly easy time since the Cup meeting, but there is nothing amiss with him and the gallops he will get before leaving for the North, and also at Ellerslie after his arrival, should have him right again for the Cup event. Tout le Monde lias progressed very satisfactorily since his recent racing and there seems to be a tendency to favour his Cup chances more than ti'ose of his stablemate. R. Reed has been definitely engaged for Gay Crest, and 11. Wiggins will be on Tout le Monde.

Tho Quoin reeled off four furlongs on the grass in 49 3-ss. lie, too, has done well of late and will be a, useful stable representative in the Railway Handicap, in which he will be ridden by Wiggins. Fast Passage was given a. couple of circuits on the plough at, half-paie. She has not been galloped since Thursday last owing to ligament trouble developing, and, although she appeared to he all right after work, and is to be kept going in view of her proposed trip to Auckland, thine is n risk that she may break down if called upon to undertake the strenuous work necessary to keep her in order for the Auckland Cup engagement. Whether or not she will participate will not be decided for a week or so yet, and her Cup admirers will keenly follow her progress during that period. In the meantime it can be taken for granted that, unless serious consequences arise, she will be on hand at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Silver Ring, with a light-weight up, was allotted a six-furlong task oil the plough, lie ran the first three furloutrs from the winning post in 30a and the first half-mile in 49 3-ss, but he then commenced to weaken, five fnvlonifa taking 1-3 and the full journey i.t" 2-5. 'I ho fast pace, early probably accounted for his disappointing finish, but his effort was not by any means encouraging in view of his Railway Handicap engagement.

SHORT SPELL FOR BENEFICE After a final work-out on t-lio eve of the Waikato meeting, Benefice showed signs of soreness, arid it was decided not (o continue her engagement in the Farewell Handicap Benefice is being (rented for • the ailment and will he j-ri veil a short, spell from the tracks. K. Morrison is hopeful that the left will respond quickly to treatment and allow the mare to resume her preparation for the Auckland Christmas meeting. Benefice was doing well in her training, and her recent, work indicated that she would soon be back to her previous good form. RACING FIXTURES December 7, S—Woodville District Jockey Club.
