TRIALS AT TAKANINI

CORONIS AND GAY MARIGOLD

BEST HALF-MILE OF SEASON

SPRINT BY HIGH COMEDY

Although rain fell after the breakfast interval at Takanini yesterday, the work had been practically completed. A large amount of fast, work was accomplished on both the inside grass and plough tracks, which were excellent condition.

Greek Gold (Taylor). Holly Lu (Jones) and Exaggeration (Gilmer) were practically in lino at the conclusion of six furlongs in 1.18 2-5. All were going well within themselves at the end. Exaggeration is the only one of the trio with an engagement tomorrow and Bhe will strip in first-class condition.

Principal (.Tones) jumped away in front of Helium (Grice) and led him throughout a mile gallop in 1.45 4-5. Principal has not raced since Easter, but ho is now shaping better in his work and is not without prospects at Takapuna, although a race is certain to benefit him.

Bugle Call (Coram) and Princess Star (Mcllroy) were both pulling hard while running fivo furlongs in 1.4 4-5, upon which they could have improved greatly. Both are better for recent racing and they are expected to show up at Takapuna to morrow. Gold Pocket (Gilmer) was finishing better than Expectancy (Taylor) over three furlongs in 37 2-ss. Gold Pocket, who has had a comparatively easy time lately, is thriving well and should pay his way a little later in the season.

The best gallop of the morning was recorded by Coronis (Gilmer), who beat Gay Marigold (Moore) by a neck over half a mile, brilliantly executed in 47 4 ss. tho fastest over the journey recorded at Takanini this season. Both fillies finished strongly and Coronis was particularly pleasing. She will have a big following in the Cambria Handicap to-morrow Prolyxo (Moore) jumped away in front of Reviver (Wiggins) and High Comedy (Walters) at the five-furlongs post, Prol.vxo and High Comedv coming homo together well clear of Reviver in 1.2. This was a smart gallop and one that suggests that High Comedy is returning to form. Reviver showed her usual speed for half a mile, but, finished rather weakly. However, she will not bo pitted against such strong opposition in the maiden to-morrow. Royal Artist (Walters), with Lady Carrington (Edwards) to assist over the last three furlongs, rsyi seven in 1.30. the last three furlongs in 395. The Alison Cup candidate moved well and should run a good race to-morrow. Tavern Knight (Manson) was going easily while running half a mile in 57 3-ss. He is making good progress. Star Artist (Walters) ran half a mile from the six furloncs to the two in 48 3-5s and did it well. So far this filly has not done as well in public as she is capable of doing in private. On the plough Great Emblem (Wiggins) was going better than Eldora (Manson) at the end of seven furlongs in 1.33 1-5. Eldora had the worst of the weights and the cun candidate, who was going solidly at the end, was just commencing to draw away. The time was not exceptional, but Great Emblem is never a particularly free trackwork'er and his effort was quite satisfactory. Speedmint (Edwards) and Prince Colossus (Bassett) strode easily over a round, the last six furlongs in 1.27. Speedmint is now in nice order and should race well in forthcoming handicaps. Palace (Craig) was striding along easily to run his last half-mile in 54 2-ss. Arch Ruler (Farrell) and Orcnda (Gilmer) were also going easily over a round in 1.59. Bell Topper (Gray). Foulwind (McLnallv) and Lord Willonyx (Forsyth) were in that order at the end of six furlongs in 1.19 1-5. Bell Topper, with the worst of the weights, finished particularly well and appears to have improved with recent racing. Lord Willonyx. who has had no fast work during the past week, faded away at the end Pillow Fight. Tea Trader. Rereatu, Alignment, Imperial Prince. Chief .Toy and a number of others did useful tasks.

T?TCCAT?TON TRAINING

SEVERAL FAST SPRINTS

LORD MASHAM'S GOOD EFFORT

[BY TELEGRAPH—OWN COR RESPONDENT] , CHRISTCHURCH. Thuifeoay

Although a Inrge number of horses in commission at Riccarton will be racing on Saturday, there was only a limited amount of fast work to-day. due mostly to the fact tliat practically all those carded carried out engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting, and have only required useful tasks since to keep them up to racing condition. The trial grass was open, but the plough was in most demand. A heavy north-west wind made matters unpleasant during the early morning, and times were affected. Jaloux, Azalea. Silver Scorn and Berate were again worked the reverse way.

Rocket and Fleeting Glance kept close together throughout a mile gallop, taking 1.4 G. Fleeting Glance had a slight advantage up to within a chain of the post, but Rocket headed her on the line. Spoon showed further improvement by doing six furlongs in 1.18. She is to r.alie her reappearance on Saturday with D. O'Connor in the saddle, and although not quite seasoned will make a good allowing. Hamo and Night Flyer ran a similar distance in 1.18 1-5. the former doing the better at the finish. Juniper executed a. like task in 1.18 2-5. Ho is to be again ridden by H. Turner in the High-weight Handicap, and L. J. Ellis will have the mount oil him in the Fernside Handicap. Cricket Bat once more attracted attention by covering six furlongs in 1.14 3-5. He only hid a light-weight up. but this was a brilliant performance under the conditions. There is no doubt about Cricket Bat's ability, but his track work of late has been more attractive than his efforts in public. Trial Plate Candidates

Lord Masham repealed his good sprint of Tuesday by reeliriK off half a mile* ill 40 2-ss, finishing slightly in front of Gold Cross. Both should race prominently in t:ie Trial Plate on Saturday. Craigavon and Monastic, under featherweights, got away on terms on this occasion, and raced abreast practically throughout a mile gallop, taking 1.44 2-5. the last half in 535. The former will bo ri<>clen by (lie stable apprentice A. Russell in the Rangiora Cup. A rider has not yet been secured for Monastic. Idolize was not allowed to show her best in recording 1.18 2-5 for six furlongs. Eupotor easily beat. Natural over five furlongs run in 1.5 3-5. Reserve Fund took 1.5 for a similar task. Grampian and Helen Gold strode over six furlongs attractively in 1.17 4-5. The latter is coming to hand satisfactorily, and will be useful later on. Grand Review ran half a mile along the back in 52 2-ss. and Great Star followed in similar time. Great Star is suffering from slight fetlock trouble, and may not be at his best on Saturday. R. G'oveney has been engaged for the pair. Royal Sceptre could have improved on tho 1.5 3-5 he registered for five furlongs. Don Jose in Good Order

Don Jose covered seven furlongs nt an even pace in 1.33 3-5. He looks in splendid order, but bis public efforts have been disappointing this season. Sharp Thorn finishe-d clear of Wise Choice at the end of five furlongs run in 1.5 2-5. Metal Bird and Silver Streak were sent from the five-furlong peg, Golden Dart joining in at the half-mile. The last-named, a eon of Finora. finished a length in front of Metal Bird, with Silver Streak beaten off. the full journey taking 1.3 4-5. C. Emerson is at present breaking in a, two-year-old filly by Silverado from Tuahine, bred and owned by Mr. D. O. Rutherford. The youngster has everything to recommend her, and is to be given plenty of time before she will be paraded in public.. (Jay Seton, n two-year-old winner at the Waiknto meeting, is a half-sister to Tuahine. who is by Lucullus from Persia, by Marble Arch.

MISHAP TO LORD AINTREE

SEVERE INJURY TO TENDON

The four-year-old gelding Lord Aintree. by Hunting Song from Miss Ainslee. overreached and cut a tendon badly while working at. Ellcrslie yesterday and it is probable that he will require a lengthy spoil before lie is able to race again. Lord Aintree has a habit of bounding when ho goes out on to the track to do his work and it was while doing this that lie injured himself. Lord Aintree had iust cone on to the course proper to gallop six furlongs with Karancapai and attempted to break awav with his rider, who had difficulty in restraining him, and he had travelled about a furlong when he faltered and it v.-s3 apparent 1 hnt he was in trouble. It is unfortunate for the connections of Lord Aintree to lose his services at this stage, as he hae been racing consistently and looked like having a very successful season.
