BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

SUNDAY BAND CONCERTS PROPERTY RENOVATING It was reported to the City Council last evening iliaL tlic Building Const ruction Hill had been considered l»y the city engineer, who had submitted a report upon it. to .'i sub-committee of the Works Committee, following which the chairman, Mr. IT. I'. Burton, and (lie city engineer had proceeded to Wellington with a view <o making representations to the Minister in charge of the bill, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coatcs, in regard to various matters.

Estimates of the cost of extensions to the beef-chilling department at the abattoir were presented, as follows: Buildings, £2500; additional plant, £IOOO. On the recommendation of the Public Services Committee, it was decided that the city engineer should proceed with the preparation of detailed plans and specifications for tho buildings and the committee was empowered to proceed with the scheme.

In reply to suggestions by the Bemuera East Ratepayers' Association regarding the development of Lako Waiatarua Park, it was decided to advise the association tiiat tho development under No. 5 scheme was proceeding and would be carried out as expeditiously as possible; that it would be some time before any of tho area could be used as sports grounds, and the council would bear in mind the matter of having a lake in the area if that should prove practicable. Protest from a Band On the recommendation of the Townplanning Committeo it was decided not to grant an application for leave to use a property of 9} acres between Roslyn Avenue and Upland Road, Remuera, as a dairy farm and to erect cowsheds thereon. Thirty-seven residents of tho neighbourhood had signed a letter objecting to the proposal.

A letter was received from the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union Silver Band, protesting against the council's refusal of permission for it to play in the Domain oil a Sunday evening owing to the fact that the Municipal Band, would be playing every Sunday evening in Albert Park. Application was made by the band for leave to play in the Domain next Sunday evening. On the Mayor's motion it was decided to grant the application, on condition that Iho performance should not begin earlier than 8.15. It was decided to refer the general question of Sunday evening band concerts to the Parks Committee for a report.

It was decided to inform the Tamaki Yacht Club that it was doubtful whether the council could legally agree to lease to the club a portion of the Selwyn Domain, Mission Bay, for the erection of a clubhouse, and that in any case the council would not be prepared to do so. Renovation of Properties

On the recommendation of the Property Committee it was resolved, after some discussion, to accept two tenders for the renovation of five city endowment properties, consisting of four shops and a brick warehouse. It was decided that another property, a dwelling, be renovated by the city engineer's department. On the committee's recommendation it was resolved that in future tenders be called and contracts let for all jobs estimated at over £SO.

Proposals for a comprehensive revision of the new by-law No. 11, relating to signs and hoardings, were submitted by the Association of New Zealand Advertisers (Incorporated). It -was decided that the matter be considered at a special meeting on December 1, when the by-law would come up for confirmation. Formal resolutions to raise the Tamaki district drainage, loan of £50,000 and the Ponsonby Park redemption loan of £13,550, were submitted and passed.
