OBITUARY

DR. WALTER FELL

The death occurred at his residence, Mahina Bay, Wellington, of Dr. Walter Fell, aged 77.

The late Dr. Fell was formerly well known in Wellington, where he practised his profession for many years before his retirement. Fie was born in Nelson in 1855, his father being the late Mr. Alfred Fell. His early years from tho age of four were spent"in the .South of France, where his parents resided. Later lie went to Rugby, and then to Oxford. Hestudied medicine at St. Thomas' Hospital, where he was house surgeon and house physician. In 1884 lie returned to New Zealand, joining Dr. W. E. Collins in practice in Wellington. Dr. Fell was an enthusiastic yachtsman, and his five-tonner, Mahina, was well known in harbour racing and in cruising waters, lie was a past-president of tho Port Nicholson Yacht Club, and the Star Boating Club. Ho was also greatly interested in painting, and was a member for many years of the committer of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, as well as a past'president of the Academy.

Dr. Fell retired from his Wellington practice about 1907, but when the war broke out lie went to England and was given a, commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps and served iu various capacities in various parts of tho war zone, eventually serving in tho Soldiers' Hospital at Bothnul Green, and being promoted to (lie rank of major. Dr. Fell married in 1886 the third daughter of tho late Mr. Justice Richmond. Ho is survived by bis wife, and two sons. Mr. Christopher Fell, of Whangarei, Lieutenant-Commander W. Th u rscla y The death occurred early this morning in (ho Whangarei Hospital of Mr. Alexander -Murdoch McLeod, one of the. pioneers of tho Whangarei district, aged 68 years. He was born at Kauri, being a son of Mr. William McLeod, one of the Scotsmen from Nova Scotia svlio settled at Warkworth. As a young man Mr. A. M. McLeod was employed in A. M. Rust and Company's store at Kamo. Ho married Miss Jemima Simpson, and about ,40 years ago went to Wanganui, where ho worked in tho building trade, taking up architecture. He returned to Whangarei some years later and entered into practico as an architect, carrying on until a severe illness some months ago.

Mr. Mr! .icod was actively associated with public ami Church life, and was an older of St. Paul's Church at Wangnnui, where lie was also a member of the borough council. Ho was a prominent Freemason and an officer in the Druids' Lodge in "Whangarei. Ho was also a, foundation member of the Whangarei Rotary Club. Ho was ono of the leading members of tlio Whangarei Presbyterian Church, boing an elder and for over nineteen years superintendent of the Sunday school." Mr. McLeod is survived by liis widow and one daughter.
