THEFT FROM EMPLOYERS

YOUNG BUTCHER'S ADMISSION

MAGISTRATE DEFERS SENTENCE

A pica of guilty was entered by Lionol Howard Grafton, aged 21, when charged in the Police Court yesterday with stealing sums of money totalling £27 17s 4d, the property of his former employers. Detective-Sergeant Doyle said that during the past 18 months accused had been employed by a butchery firm as a delivery roundsman, and had received a salary of £4 a week. Between October 8 and November 16 tliis year accused misappropriated sundry small sums of money which lie collected from customers of the firm. He issued receipts for all moneys collected, but on the duplicate receipt forms handed into the firm's office he showed the customers as having pajd lesser amounts than they had actually paid. The difference between the amounts on the original and duplicate forms he retained for his own purposes. He kept an accurate record of all moneys taken and was quite frank when interviewed by a detective. Apparently ho had got into financial difficulties, and this led to the commission of the offences. Ho was singlo and resided with his parents, and had not previously appeared in Court. It was stated by counsel, Sir. Aekins, that accused belonged to a very respectable family. While he admitted taking the money, the fact that he kept a record of all the sums showed that he intended to make repayment. There was an explanation for accused's conduct, but it was not desirable that it should bo stated in open Court.

The magistrate, Mr. W. J?. MoKean, remanded accused for sentence until tomorrow, pending a report from the probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell. Bail was not sought. An application for the suppression of accused's name was refused.
