" I WAS VERY PROVOKED"
"This man is making his 79th appearance here," said Detective-Sergeant Dovle when Alfred James Massey, aged 65, musician, pleadcjl guilty in the Police Court yesterday to charges of drunkenness and using obscene language. The offences were stated by Mr. Doyle to have been committed at tho Auckland railway station on Monday evening. "I am extremely sorry," said accused. "I must have been provoked. It -would not have happened had I not bumped into a gentleman. I went to the railway station to go to Papakura and had t,he fare in my pocket when arrested. I had my music with me and I was going to sell it to obtain money to pay a fine."' Mr. Doyle: Methylated spirits are tho cause of his trouble. Accused: 1 admit I have been here 79 times in 40 years, but the past is clone with. When I belonged to a gentlemen's club in Poverty Bay I was drunk 52 times in a year and was never locked up. Why should I be now ?
Tlie Magistrate, Mr. W. It. McKean: You admit you used bad language ? -Accused: I was very provoked and bad words might have slipped out. For using obscene language accused was fined £2 and for drunkenness £l. Default was fixed at seven days' imprisonment.
