STRIPPING OF TROUT
RECORD IN CANTERBURY
NEARLY FOUR MILLION EGGS
A new record of 3,950.000 brown trout eggs was the result of the 1932 stripping of trout in the Selwyn River and the Main Drain, by the rangers employed by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. Appreciative remarks on thia achievement were made at a meeting of the council of the society last week..A detailed. report on the work undertaken by the hatchery committee for the 1932 season stated that P "er Digby commenced stripping in the on May 20 and finished on July 2. During that period 3210 females and 2309 males had been stripped, the reports indicating that all the fish were in excellent condition, the fish stripped being approximately 41b. to 61b. in weight. As usual the main run took place on about June 22, and with the assistance of Mr. Robinson ,Mr. Digby collected 3,590,000 brown trout eggs from the Selwyn. Ranger Bearman collected, from tha Main Drain, 370,000, making a total of 3,960,000. This easily constituted a record, and had it been necessary several millions more could haye been collected.
