BUILDING OF WHARF

ABOUT £12,000 TO BE SPENT

After negotiations extending over some years definite arrangements have now been made for the construction of a wharf at Waitangi, the principal port of the Chatham Islands, the contract having been let to the Rope Construction Company, of Auckland. The contract, price for the wharf alona is £10,348, and the cost of the approach and the shed is expected to bring the total expenditure to about £12,000. This represents a very substantial saving on the original "estimate that the total cost would be between £IB,OOO and £19,000.

The provision-of a wharf is expected to add to the prosperity of the islands, which have been severely handicapped iu the past through lack of adequate shipping facilities. A new trawler, to be used in cod and other fishing, is at present bo. its way from England. The cost of the wharf is being shared equally by the Public Works Department and the Chatham Islands County Council
