RUNAWAY VAN

STOPPED AT EDGE OF CLIFF DRIVER ESCAPES INJURY A remarkable escape from injury was experienced by the driver of a delivery van which left Stanley Point Road shortly after 5 p.m. yesterday, and careered down a long slope toward the edge of a cliff. The vehicle was prevented from plunging into Shoal Bay only by a coal dump on the cliff top. The driver of the van, Mr. J. Holbrook, had been engaged in delivering bread for a city firm, and was attempting to turn the vehicle at the end of the road when the accident occurred. The vehicle suddenly moved forward instead of reversing, and the driver was not able to regain control. Mr. Holbrook was thrown clear when the vehicle plunged down the slope and overturned. The van was halted abruptly by tho coal dump, and was stopped from diving into the sea from a cliff about 25ft. 'high. At the time of tho accident, there was a fair depth of water beneath the Cliff. ' ' ' The driver was dazed, but he was able to proceed to a house in the vicinity and communicate by telephone with a Devonport garage with a view to recovering the van. The vehicle was fairly extensively damaged. Efforts to raise it to the roadway will be made to-day.
