SCHOOL BOXING

MOUNT ALBERT GRAMMAR FIRST ANNUAL TOURNAMENT RESULTS OF PRELIMINARIES The first annual boxing tournament of the Mount Albert Grammar School was commenced in the school hall yesterday afternoon. Tho tourney is the biggest of its kind ever held in. an Auckland school. There were 150 entries altogether and the preliminary bouts were decided with commendable promptitude. Considering this was the initial effort of the school in conducting a tournament, and that some of the boys were donning gloves for the first time, the standard was quite good, and if some of the contests were lacking a little in science, they were characterised by willingness and splendid sporting spirit. The equipment and gloves were loaned free of charge for the occasion by the Northern Boxing Association and the president of that body, Mr. G. Bush, acted as judge. There was no necessity for a referee, as clinching was conspicuous by its absence. The tournament will be continued, this afternoon, when the semi-finals and finals will be decided. BOY SCOUTS' TOURNEY Tho Boy Scouts' annual boxing tournament will be held in Scots Hall this eyening for the Legion of Frontiersmen Shield. Some lively boxing is anticipated. PROFESSIONAL CONTEST OXLEY AND HUGHES FOR TITLE Ted Oxley has been hailed in the South as the next New Zealand champion and ha will have the opportunity of proving those claims when he steps into the ring at the Town Hall next Monday evening to box Archie Hughes for the New Zealand lightweight championship, Since coming to Zealand, Hughes has done everything that has been asked of him, building up a great record. culminating in his winning the New Zealand title, and he haß established h.rnself as one of the most popular boxers to ever visit these shores. Oxley has had a sensational rise in the professional ranks and his previous match with Hughes ha* earned him a title bout. Whether or not he is good enough to beat Hughes oil this occasion remains to be seen, but although it is asking a big task of him to beat the all-conqi>ering champion, ho went within an ace of doing it before, and may succeed ,on this occasion. There is no questioning Oxiey's ability, there is no doubt about his terrific hitting; and the opinion is being freely expressed that with a knock-out punch in either hand Oxley may end matters before the 15 rounds are finished. It should be a great contest and spectators will be well rewarded for their patronage. _ The following amateur preliminaries will support the mailt event: —Broadhead v. Xeale, Bruno v. Donovan, Aitketihe*d v, Jones, Andrews v. Hogg, Cook v. Hill.
