RAINBOW TROUT
ARRIVAL IN NEW ZEALAND FIRST RAISED AT AUCKLAND An interesting account of how rainbow trout first came into New Zealand was told at tho Acclimatisation Societies' conference in Wellington last week by Mr. C. A. Whitney, of Auckland. Some years ago he said a friendly visitor had been afforded some pheasant shooting in Auckland, and wishing to reciprocate sent from California a consignment of rainbow trout ova. They were hatched in the botanical gardens in Auckland, and their propagation and handling were continued at the hatchery farm. From those rainbow trout, practically tho whole of New Zealand was stocked. Only in recent years had further rainbow trout been obtained, but the majority of rivers in Australia and New Zealand, including Lake Taupo, were originally stocked from Auckland. Brown trout had already been acclimatised by tho Hawke's Bay and Taranaki societies.
