NINE-HOLE GOLF LINKS

INNOVATION AT HAMILTON COURSE OPENED FOR PLAY [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON", Sund.ay The new hine-holo golf course which has been constructed by the Hamilton Domain Board in the Lake Domain was officially opened by the Mayor, Dr. F. D. Pinfold, yesterday afternoon in tho presenco of nearly 300 people. -Appreciation of the work of Mr. H. T. Gillies, of Hamilton, in the designing and forming of tho coftrso was expressed by Dr. 11. Douglas, who said Hamilton, as far as he know, was the first town in tho Dominion to possess such links. In commending tho Domain Board for its enterprise, Dr. Pinfold said the course was set amid surroundings which wero probably unsurpassed in tho Dominion. After declaring the links open for play, ho called upon Mrs. Pinfold to play tho first ball. Tho course is laid out in an area of between four and five acres in a natural amphitheatre at the northern end of the lake grounds. Tho shortest hole is 41 yards and tho longest 119 yards. Tho latest American ideas have been incorporated in tho formation of the links and several unique features aro included. All the holes havo been designed to promote perfect control of the mashie. The course itself is known as an "M.N.0.P." course, meaning mashie, niblick or putter. Tho first shot is played with tho mashie. If this stroke is successful tho next is played with tho putter, but if it is faulty, tho niblick is required. As tho bunkering Is severe, it is probable tho niblick will bo used moro than tho putter for the second stroke. Extensive work has been carried out by the Domain Board to improve the appearance of tho course, tho surrounding slopes being planted with trees and shrubs. A clubhouse, built in a, rustic stylo in keeping with the surroundings, has been erected on a site overlooking tho linkf.
