INCREASE IN BETTING

AVONDALE TOTALISATOR' RISE OF '47 PER CENT SHOWN LARGE CROWD AT RACES An unexpectedly largo totalisator turnover formed a feature of tho opening of the Avondalo Jockey Club's Spring Meeting on Saturday. The investments totalled £27.296, an increase of-47 per cent compared with the corresponding day last year, when the machine handled £18,512 10s. Tho fact that the weather was brilliantly fine, whereas rain fell on (lie first day of last year's meeting, played an important part in the improved result, for it attracted a much larger attendance. Under such conditions an increase was expected, but it was littlo thought that the turnover would be nearly half as much again as that of last year. Tho turnover was tho largest that has been recorded on any one day at Avondale since tho second day of the autumn meeting in April, 1931, when the investments amounted to £27,590. Tho sum handled on tho second day of last year's spring meeting was £15,672 10s, and it is expected that this amount will bo considerably exceeded to day. Sinco tho opening of the new racing and trotting season in Auckland on August 1 the totalisator returns generally havo shown notable improvement compared with last peason, when decreases, often very large, were recorded at meeting after meeting.
