Sunday Principal interest in the Masterton meeting yesterday was taken in the Masterton Handicap. On paper the field was strong, as it contained winners of the New Zealand Cup, Wellington Cup. New Zealand Oaks and Parliamentary Handicap, as we*! as other recent winners. Korokio and Red Sun were equal favourites. The race was a triumph for Korokio. Jumping out well, 6lie lod all the way. Barry eased her in the middle stages, but when challenged in the straight she went away again to win very decisively in fast time. Korokio carried lllb over lifer New Zealand Cup weight and her performance was very impressive, being reminiscent of her Oaks win last year at Riccarton, when she put up record time. Korokio is undoubtedly very well at present. Red Sun did best of tho other Cup horses. Ho came into third place from well back. The others were completely outpaced. Stanchion got left and took no part in tho running. The form of the two-year-old winner. Dollar Prince," was not very impressive. He beat his better-fancied stable-mate Lady Nan narrowly all the way. Dollar Prince is not a bad sort, in spito of the fact that he went out at a very long price. Epigram made a fair showing, but. the others showed poor form. The much-boomed Rosewing filly Wait and See was never in tho picture. The maiden horses were a poor lot, but the performance, of the winner. West Tor, was good. He got into a lot of trouble on the home turn and went back, but he came through in tho straight to win well. Ho is Australian-bred.'This was his first race and as he is chronically lamo he has done little work. Royal Routine did not have strenuous opposition in tho sprint event, but his performance was brilliant, and enhanced by the fact that ho got his tongue over tho bit early in tho race. . ; Another Now Zealand Cup candidate, bull Mark, won tho High-weight Handicap with u good long finishing run. Minstrel Lad s win was easily and impressively achieved. Gay Court also won very decisively with a solid finishing run. . Tho last race provided the best finish ot the day, with heads only between the hrst four horses. Lady Ronald just got up at the post. Hunter's-Moon was made free uso ■of out in front, with King Peg, and jußt failed to seo it out. ■ Mr. KembaU's bad luck with his team persists. Cup! Paraki broke a fetlock on tho post, in t'ue High-weight Handicap and was destroyed. B Burgess had a good day. He produced first' and second in the two-year-old race, first in tho maiden race (both at extreme prices), second in the Masterton Handicap, won tho last, race and was also second and third in two other hack events. DUNEDIN JOTTINGS HORSES FOR WELLINGTON [])Y -TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] DUNEDIN, Sunday The Wingatui horses who raced at tho Timaru meeting did. not run up to expectations, but 601110 of them had their chances wrecked by bad starting, Kerbside faded after getting well away 111 her race, but Hula Beilo failed to get near the money. Cleaner was hopelessly leit in the same race. Palantua was a. good thing beaten in tho 'Spring Stakes, but Molten and Worship could not givo a start to Shamfight and catch him in a? fast-run race. Tippliug was, iiot. quite seasoned enough to Geo out tho distance in 'the Kerrytown Handicap, and. vPink Papdr also requires ft bit more time. Blue Hills was hopelessly left, # # An" enlarged phplbgrapli of the injury to .Garter Knight! ehcnvs that from tile mside of'the hock down about Gin. there wan a wound almost tho full width of the leg. Fortunately, the vjound iu below the. .jointand henc'o a better chanco. exists of saving the colt, who appears bright and healthy in: condition. • • . Guarantee and Southdown leave early tor Trentham to fulfil engagements at the Wellington Spring Meeting. Both colts havo done well since winning at the Dunedin Spring Meeting, and should shape well at 'irenWilson goes to Wellington with Captain's Gift, and Kerbside.
