Sunday Morena, favourite for the Otaio Hurdles at Timaru Yesterday, took charge from Conjurer 11. after outjumping him six furloners from home, and entered the straight, well clear of Nine of Spades and Hounslpw. An easy victory seemed assured for him, but his rider was' nearly caught napping as Hounslow got up to within half, a length of him. Conjurer 11. was going well out in front when he m: do a faulty jump. The contest for the lycho Hack Handicap was spoilt to a large extent by the straggling start. Before the straight was reached Kerbsido was out clear of Some Good, Crash, Silver Streak, High Tor and j Hula Belle all racing in close order. Kerbside was in trouble inside the distance, and was soon headed by Some Good. In an exciting finish Some Good hung on to beat Silver Streak bv half a length, with a neck margin to High Tor. Then came' Solwit, Crash, and the favourite, Hula Belle. .. . There was a. well-distributed pool in tae Timaru Cup. Although run at a slow pace tli© race was full of interest. Ronndinpr the homo turn Merry Peel showed the way to Some Toff. Shatter. Minerval and Locksley, with Cricket Bat and Ramo m close attendance. Some Toff had Merry Peel settled inside the distance, and was then tackled py Shatter, who beat the light-weight by over a length. Minerval was two lengths back, a length in front of Cricket Bat. who was follewed by Water Power. Merry Peel and Ramo, with Locksley last, . Shatter' lost some ground going out oi tho straight, but was up with the leaders with half a. mile to go, and looked a winner as soon as the run home was commenced. His display was most attractive from the New Zealand Cup standpoint. Some lot! continued tho good form lie showed at Wingatul. His tur u may come soon. Minerval, tho favourite, was always favourably placed, but the slow pace did not suit lnm. Cricket Bat received a couple of set backs which cost him much ground. Merry Peel again failed as a stayer. pave promise of being in at tho finish but his effort was not. long sustained. Locksley and Water Power also faded out. . Palantua was supported down to a very short price for tlie Spring .Stakes, but. was badly treated over the early stages, and was called upon to give thb leaders n. substantial break entering-.the. straight, Inside the dist'ance Sbnmfight had tho measuro ot Elgindale. Palantua then appeared on the sceue, and in a wonderful finish b ham fig tit won by half a length. Elgindale was three lengths back, in front of Molten, Dracula and Worship.. . . ; Rocket, racing m his new colours for tho first time, recorded an. attractive win in the Kerry!own Hack Handicap, his initial puccess. 110, beat Red Royal decisively by two lengths, 'Tipiilinp: was a similar distance away, • a length Jn . front of Metal Bird. Red Royal ran a- .solid race throughout after havingr to make all the His rider weighed in '2Jib. over weight and was disqualified for the race, Tippling being placed second and Metal Bird third. The concluding event was responsible foe the defeat of two stron? favourites, Ranelaffh and Belvoir, who both failed to take part in the final tussle. Belvoir was first into the straight from Blue Metal; Mount Boa and Royal Sceptre, but did not. last Inn ff, and Blue Metal was in chargo- inside the, distance; Mount Boa then drew up to him. In a ueolc and neck'struggle oyer the Inst hundred, yards Bluo Metal held. Mount Boa off to beat him' by a head. Night Recital was third tbrea lengths away. On returning*to the-enclosure, a complaint was lodged by the rider of Mount Boa that his mount was struck over the head by the rider of Blue Metal, about: 100 yards from the post. The stewards decided that although the- interference* wag accidental-, ij nevertheless cost Mount Boa tho, race, and they reversed tho two first places.
