CLOSE OF THE SEASON HANLON BENEFIT MATCH MARIST TEAM SUCCESSFUL The Rugby League season was closed on Saturday when the Marist team played a team from tho rest of tho clubs in the Hanlon benefit match, at Carlaw Park. Thero was only a fair attendance, but spectators wero treated to a fast, open game by Marist, which defeated its opponents by 27 points to 16. A feature of the game was the splendid football of W. Hassan, who scored throe clever tries for Marist. Tho Marist backs had too much combination for Auckland, and tho rear division gave a high-clnss display. Auckland assumed the offensive from the' kick-off and Prentico and Oliff combined well. The first-named burst through and passed to Leatherbarrow, who scored. Soagar failed to convert. Fast play by the Auckland backs enabled Oliff to race through tho opposition, but Brown dropped a pass from Brimblo and a try was lost. Hassan, however, cleverly beat tho Auckland backs and passed to Schultz. who scored between the posts, Mechan converted. The Auckland forwards rushed play to tho Marist twenty-five, where Cornthwaite failed to return cleanly, Lunn being unlucky not to. score. Then Iveson made a nice run and passed to Thompson who was overtaken by Prentice a fevv yards from Auckland's line. Clean handling by List and Dunn saw the first-named race Schultz into a good position and the wing scored unopposed. Cornthwaite failed to convert. Good play by S. Clark was improved by Lunn, who broke through the Marist defence and passed to Crook, whoso pace carried him over at tho corner. Seagar failed to convert. Then Hassan worked the blind side, but Marist lost a try when Flanagan missed the final pass from Dunn. Dempsey cleared aftd Leatherbarrow carried play to halfway. List charged down a return from Dempsey, and secured again to score a simple try. Herring just failed to convert. Hassan scored his third try with a splendid solo run through the opposition. He also converted. The Marist backs were too superior and Dunn made a nice opening 'before passing to List, who scored. Dunn failed to convert, and the game entfed: — Marist, 27: Auckland, 16. Mr. C. Chapman was referee. BOXING COMO-OXLEY BOUT TO-NIGHT The much-awaited appearance of Cecil (Kid) Como in the Auckland ring will lie made at the Town Hall to-night, when he is to meet Ted Oxley. New Zealand's clever young light-weight, in a scheduled 15 rounds battle. Como has come hero with a great record of 183 fights for only 14 losses against some of tho greatest feather-weights and light-weights in the world. In spite of this strenuous campaigning he is entirelv unmarked, proof positive of his cleverness, and Auckland ring patrons have been keen to see him in action. Como has had the benefit of sparring with R. Purdie. and he has finished his training in perfect condition. He is confident that his first appearance, in NewZealand will rot mean a loss against his record. Oxley hns been fighting brilliantly and is well remembered here for the fine battle he made against Archie Hughes, while in his last contest he knocked out Johnnie Leckie. Oxley is in splendid condition and is confident he will give the American plenty to think about. As Oxley is a hard puncher as well as a good boxer ho should be well matched with Como. and patrons can expect a great bout and some brilliant boxing.
