THE ASSOCIATION GAME

FALCON CUP COMPETITION SUCCESS OF Y.M.C.A. TEAM THISTLE BEATEN IN FINAL Following its success in the Auckland Football Association's senior championship, Y.M.C.A. proved conclusively that it i 3 the outstanding nenior team in Auckland this season by defeating Thistle in the final of tho Falcon Cup ltnock-out competition at Blandford Park on Saturday. It was a disappointing fame, in which Y.M.C.A. displayed an all-round superiority to .secure a comfortable verdict. Conditions were excellent and conducive to the best o£ football. It took the pinj era a few _ minutes to cot accustomed to the fast conditions, Y.M.C.A. being the quicker lo find ita feot, and a swift onslaught on the right saw Chalmers back pass to Christie, who scored with a great drive irom 30yds. Thistle replied strongly after this reverse, but without the cohesion characteristic of the Y.M.C.A. attacks. Wood worked into a good position and gave Williamson an easy opportunity to scoro which was thrown away. The subsequent exchanges were of a very uninteresting nature, the ball being swung about haphazardly. Christie was working the Y.M.C.A. left with more success than the right and Hamilton and Kay responded well, but invariably spoiled their work at the crucial moment by a weak pass. Just prior to tho close of the first half Thistle drew level, a weak shot by Williamson being misjudged by Cowie, the ball trickling into the net. The secoud spell opened in uninspiring fashion, with neither team showing its usual combination. Mowat sent Humphreys into action with a well-judged pass, the ball being taken through and swung across nicely, but Bell just failed to (jet to closo quarters. Shortly afterwards a fine solo effort bv Hamilton gave Y.M.C.A. the lead. A firsttime drive struck the crossbar and Hamilton followed it up to head past Gerrard into tho net. Thistle replied strenuously and an exciting melee resulted in tho Y.M.C.A. gpalmouth, but relief came with a free kick. Rushing back Bell worked in and scored Y.M.C.A.'s third goal. Y.M.C.A put tho issue beyond doubt when Cowie scored from a penalty received for "hands" against a Thistle defender. Before the close McCosh reduced the deficit, the crime ending with the score:—-Y.M.C.A.. 4: Thistle. 2. Mr. J. Firth was referee.
