TURF IN AUSTRALIA

AMMON RA UNPLACED RACE AT MOONEE VALLEY FINISHES THIRD TO LAST NARROW WIN FOR PARKWOOD (Received September 25, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE,' Sent, 25 There was great surprise at the Moonee Valley races yesterday, when tho Nf*» Zea-land-bred champion. Amnion Ra, having his first race for the season, ran unplaced in the Quality Handicap. Not only that, but also he finished third to last in tho field of 10—a JiappeniuK that was not -thought possible.

Ammoii Ita got awa.v well from a good start alter some trouble at the barrier, lvaoola and Casque D'Or cut him down and after passing tho half-mile Reed rushed Parlcwood past Kaoota and Amnion Ra. The last-named was now beaten and began to give ground at tho turn, where Parkwood and Liberal had the race in hand... Parkwood winning by a neck, with Vauntry three-quarters of a length away third. Excuses offered for Amnion Ra's defeat are that he had not raced for some months and tho short, sharp turns on a course that was strange to him bothered him. Araunah also started in this race. Actaeon was unplaced in tho Merrio Trial and Lady Pam and Spear Lad in the Tullamarine Handicap. Result;— QUALITY HANDICAP, Of £750; maximum handicap, 951.: 7 fur. OOyJs. PARKWOOD. C.Baillieu and W. THE TROTTING TRACK GOOD TRIALS AT EPSOM OLIVER THORPE'S TWO MILES BY ABAYDOS Jn view of tho meeting at Hamilton on October 8, horses at Epsom on Saturday wero worked tho reverse way round. The dirt track was in nico order, but tho footing was a triflo dead after tho early morning showers.

Oliver Thorpe (W. Willctls) was sent two miles and assisted by Prince Etawah (R. A. Shepherd) and Rolfo Audubon (L. Laver) on the 3ecoiul half of tho journey, ho finished very strongly to run With six furlongs covered at a steady clip, Oliver Thorpo was joined by Princo Etawah and as the mile was reached in 2.30. Rolfo Audubon hopped away, and set a sound jiace. Oliver .Lhorpe was handy as the last half-milo was entered upon and, pacing very resolutely, headed his companions in the run homo to show 2.18J for tho last mil©. Rolfo Audubon went 2.19 for his milo ancl Princo Etawah took nhlf a second longer. Nathaniel (W. Willctls) had Wee Machine (E. S. Groat) for a companion over a mile and a-half. The first half-mile took 1.14, but they wero at tho milo in 2.23. Nathaniel forged ahead and pacing with plenty of dash withstood a challenge by Weo Machine, finishing his task attractively in 3.29. Wee Machine registered 3.30. Nathaniel found tho track to his liking and gave one of his brightest displays. Working by himself and not fully extended at any stage, Kewpie's Trumph (K. Bell) gave a fine exhibition over a milo and a-half in 3.29. Ho took 1.13 to run the opening half, passed tho milo in Q. 22 and came homo the nn»l section in 1.7, going well within himself. Kewpie's Triumph has brightened .up considerably since last month's meeting and should be back to his best form again for tho Auckland spring meeting. Carnui (F. J. Smith) was allotted his usual dual tasks and performed creditably. In his first attempt ho ran a milo and a-half comfortably in 3:3 G. On tho second occasion after going a half in 1.14, ho was picked up by Sister Chris (C, Smith), the mare going out several lengths in front. Carnui. headed her off in tho run home tp register 3.33, the last half in 1.7. Sister Chris, who was having her first run at Epsom, went 2.21 for the mile. She is light in condition after a long boat trip and will require a bit of building up before she is ready to race. Litle Guy (F. J. Smith) appeared full of vigour while working two separate mile bouts. He accomplished the first in 2.20, brushing over the lust half in 1.9. In his second effort he registered 2.18, the final half in 1.8. Little Guy was keen to increase the speed, but was held in check. ..^ B J} er (A. T. Newdick) and Dan Direct (A. Patten) were to have* gone two miles, but Fisher would not strike a gait for 100 yards. Dan Direct was held back, consequently the first portion was run very slowly. -The pace improved over the last mile and when it came to the final dash Dan Direct came away to beat Fisher and register 3.36 for the last mile and a-half, the final six furlongs being run at a 2.20 gait. Gold Seam (L. McMahon) worked steadily over several laps and then jumped away' smartly from the milo peg. Ho was steadied to reach (he half-mile in 1.14, but stepping briskly over the last half, finished up the task in 2.21. 'Gold Seam paced boldly md mado no mistakes.
