RANFURLY SHIELD

RETAINED BY, CANTERBURY WAIKATO TEAM DEFEATED SEVENTEEN POINTS TO SIX [by TELEGRAPH—rRESS association] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday Tho Canterbury Rugby representatives played their sixth and last match of tho season iu defence of tho Ranfurly Shield yesterday, when they defeated Waikato by 17 points to 6. This is tho first year Canterbury has held tho trophy for a whole playing season. It was a hard game, but soldom brilliant. The ♦only brilliance ehown was when Canterbury scored its three tries.

Waikato fieldod a very rugged but unpolished team. Tho forwards, who maintained good speed and dash for the whole game, wero particularly good at breakLag away from the line-outs and swarming over Canterbury's insido backs, but the visitors' backs had not the combination to make them the winning side in big football. In tho first half Waikato played with a strong southerly wind behind it, and by judicious kicking and fast following kept Canterbury on the defensive for most of the spell. The first try camo 19 minutes after the opening of play, when Brown and Roberts, interfering with each other, spoiled the chances of either to field tho ball and the Waikato forwards swarmed over in the corner, T. Thompson scoring. Carlson failed at goal. Waikato, 3; Canterbury, 0. A few minutes later a dropped pass by King and another by Pawson gave the Waikato forwards another opening from which Carlson sent his backs away, Parker scoring at the cornor. The Bpell ended with tho scoro:—Waikato, 6; Canterbury, 0. In tho second half Canterbury established a complete mastery, scoring fairly rapidly. Roberts kicked two penalty goals and then Manchester, Bowes and Brown scoi'cd tries, the last being converted by Roberts. Bowes' try was tho result of a brilliant passing bout with which Canterbury drove from its own twenty-five line to Waikato's goal line, 10 m en handling tho ball in tho movement. A few minutes before time Hart retired with an injury to his shoulder. Tho referee, Mr. E. A. Empson, who mado a mistake about the time in the West Coast match, made another mistake in this match, shortening tho first spell by five minutes. His explanation given at the dinner later wag that his watch was discovered to be faulty. WIN FOR WELLINGTON HAWKE'S BAY DEFEATED

[BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Sunday

Tho final representative match" of the season was played at Athletic Park yesterday between Wellington and Hawke's Bay, Wellington winning by 16 points to 11, after a very closo contest. Wellington had tho advantage both back and forward in the first spell, but Hawke's Bay came into its own in tho second spell, winning tho ball when it wanted it. However, its backs could make little progress against the sound defence of Wellington, which often turned defence into attack by clever play. The weather conditions were ideal.

Tho early stages of tho game were largely in favour of Wellington, whoso backs were ahvays threatening trouble. Tho Hawke's Bay forwards were occasionally troublesome, but Wellington invariably had an answer to all tho attacks. At the end of 20 minutes' play Pollock put Wellington into a good position with a nice line kick. Wellington obtained from tho scrum and tho ball was passed through the backs to Robins, who cut out two men and sent Hislop over in tho corner. Tho kick missed.

Five later Lamason kicked! a penalty. Hawke's Bay looked dangerous and was within an ace of scoring, but Wellington cleared. Hawke's Bay camo back and Smith obtained from the linoout and went over. Grant goaled. Wellington soon added to its total when Varton misfielded tho ball and McLean got over. Lamason goaled. Just bofore the spell Reid was penalised for off-sido and Satherley goaled. Ten minutes after resuming a fine break by Griffiths resulted in McPherson scoring, although tho crowd was in doubt about tho try as the referee, Mr. R. Paton, was knocked over twenty-five yard 3 from the line and viewed Wellington's scoring movement from tho ground. Pollock goaled. A misfield in goal by Tindall, who had gone to fullback, through beinc injured, resulted in Hawke's Bay's last score, Setford touching down. Grant goaled from tho touchlino. Steero, the Hawke's Bay captain, left the field with an injured ankle 10 minutes before time. BRILLIANT CONTEST DULLER AND WELLINGTON DRAW
