WRECK OF FERNDALE
MARINE INQUIRY HELD CAPTAIN EXONERATED (Received September 23, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. Sept. 22 A French Marine Court's investigation at Delys, Algiers, reveals the fact that there were no unusual features connected with the wreck of the Ferndale on June 16. The British Board of Trade has decided that a further inquiry will not be necessary. The owners have dealt with cei'tain. officers held to be blameworthy by the French Court, but the captain was exonerated.
The White Star liner Ferndale, formerly one of the Commonwealth liners, was built at Sydney in 1924. She was a steel twinscrew steamer of 9947 gross tons. On June 16 she sent out an S.O.S. call from near Delys Rock 49 miles east of Algiers. The oil tanker British Sovereign picked up the S.O.S. and raced to the assistance of the Ferndale. The liner was found fast oil the rocks. Everyone on board was safe. Subsequently, after 5500 Dales of wool had been salvaged, the vessel became a total loss.
