DIRECTOR'S INDECISION

RONALD COLMAN'S IDLENESS ABANDONMENT OF STORIES The most popular film star in the world has been idle for nearly a year. By the votes of cinema " fans " in Britain and the United States, Ronald Colman, the Englishman, has been, siuce 1928, the world's leading screen actor from the point of view of popularity. It has taken all of this year for the United Artists' Studios and Mr. Sam Goldwyn to decide what Coleman's next picture will be. His last film, " Arrowsmith," was made in October. Since then, Colman has been getting, under contract, £6OO a week, and doing nothing. Colman was to star in " Cynara," in the part created by Sir Gerald Du Maurier, but theatrical rights caused a postponement. Then " The Brothers Karmazov " was prepared, and Mr. Goldwyn sent for Miss Anna Sten, a Russian actress, to be the heroine. Suddenly the project was turned down. Mr. Goldwyn hastily prepared " The Way of a Lancer." This had a fine part for Miss Sten, but when she arrived in Hollywood it was realised that it would be months before she could talk English properly. Meanwhile, cinema showmen were clamouring for a Colman picture, and so this .month Colman starts work, after nine months of indecision, on " Cynara."
