OFFICIAL OPENING

AUCKLAND GERMAN CLUB The official opening of the newly-formed Auckland German Club, which took place in Milne and Choyce's Reception Hall last evening, was a decided Hiiccess and was well attended liy members and also by visitors from various city clubs and organisations. On arrival the guests were received by the president, Mr. 0. J. Thedens, and Mrs. Thedens, the latter- wearing a frock of black cobweb lace with shoulder spray of white sweet peas, and coatee of peach pink moire velvet. The hall looked most attractive with bowls of pale gold daffodils harmonising with the lighter green furnishings and pastel ochre walls. The tables were arranged at the sides of the hall and a space was left in the centre for dancing. The German flag, draped at the back of the stage, held a commanding position, supported on either side by the Union Jack and the New Zealand flag. Music was a feature of the evening and included orchestral selections, under the direction of Mr. Fred Engel, and instrumental quartettes, as well as dance music. An unusual feature and very popular was the performance, by about 40 couples, of a German X'olonaise. Ihis commenced with varied march steps and finished in a waltz.

The president., Mr. .0. J. Thedens, welcomed those present in the course of a brief speech. Later songs wore given by Mrs. iSello Porter and violin solos by Mr. Rau. Bridge tables were set out for those who did not care to dance.
