WATER-LOGGED GROUND
HAWKE'S BAY BEATS WANGANUI
[BY TELEGRAPH —TOESS ASSOCIATION]
NAPIER, Sunday
The Hawke's Bay Rugby representatives defeated the visiting Wanganui team here yesterday by 10 points to 8. The standard of play was not high, due to some extent to the water-logged ground. The weather was fino but dull. After ten minutes' play Varton, the Hawke's Bay fullback, kicked a splendid field goal from well out with a heavy ball. Wanganui replied immediately with a penalty goal by Morgan. Up and down play continued for a long time, the Hawke's Bay backs failing to take advantage of the many opportunities which came their way. The home side was attacking vigorously on the visitors line when it was awarded a free kick which Satherley turned to good account. Hawke's Bay came back again with the best movement of the game so far. Smith made two determined but unsuccessful bids for the goal line in quick succession. The score at half-time was:—Hawke's Bay, 7; Wanganui. 3. A period of play of a very low standard for representative football marked the opening of the second spell. Led by Maitland, Wanganui suddenly dashed to the other end where Setford forced. The home side was soon back again and Smith scored the first try of the game with an individual effort. The visitors then went to the attack, Mainland flashing across for a good try, which was converted by Morgan. Time was called a few minutes later, the score being:— Hawke's Bay, 10; Wanganui, 8.
