NOTES ON THE FORM

LAOKOON'S FIRST SUCCESS A PROMISING PERFORMANCE RIGHT BOWER WINS WELL [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH. Saturday Fino but cold and bleak weather, after a stormy night and heavy rain, affected the attendance at tho Manawatu Hunt Club's meeting to-day. Tho heavy track made matters moro difficult lor investors and some of tho results, especially the second rlacings, wcro surprises.

Tho scratching of Warzono left only a one-dividend field for tho hurdles. Tho favourite, Warfille, finished a handy third, but never actually threatened danger. Jackplano and Laokoon mado all tho running. Luokoon had solo chargo down tho back and although Jackplano stuck to him, tho former had sufficient in hand to win comfortably. Warfillo finished a closo third and Royal Gamo was fourth. Tho winner is a big, wellgrown chestnut gelding, who has been given plonty of time to'dovclop. Ho was put over hurdles at the Napier winter meeting, but made no showing. Of tho two Trentham recruits, Royal Gamo ran a good race, and improvement in his jumping will mako him harder to beat. On tho other hand, Bright Song ran badly, being in tho rear, and then refusing five furlongs from home. Dakar, favourito in the maiden race, made a moderate showing. La Fleur jumped away clear and soon hud the lead from Maypay, Purse, Minstrel Lad and Vaudeville. La Fleur was still woll clear of this bunch in tho straight, but sho stopped badly over tho last bit., nnd tho finish was a good one. Minstrel Lad hung on best to defeat Purso nicely, with La Fleur only inches away and Vaudeville right up. Maypay, Beau Gallante and Headland finished on the heols of the first four. Tho winner is a bright chestnut son of Nigger Minstrel and Jean Laddo, dnru of Arrow Lad. Ho looks tho makings of a good sort. Purse, La Fleur, Vaudeville, Maypay, Beau Gallante and Headland all ran well and the most likely improver among them is Beau Gallante, a four-year-old Australian-bred gelding by Top Gallant, running in tho colours of tho Awapuni trainor, G. W. New. Going Suits Right Bower. Right Bower was always tho winner of tho Karere Handicap. Solitaire 11. showed speed early to gain the lead, but she was soon joined by Right Bower, and they led Tranquility by three lengths at the halfmil®. Ythan, Morrath, Acron and Lady Court were next. Solitaire 11. and Right Bower led Tranquility and Acron into tho straight and Right Bower 6onn took sole charge. Ho was pushed right homo by Acron at the finish, but was never in danger of losing, and this pair wero well clear of tho others at tho post. Solitaire 11.. Morrath, Wasteland and Ythan being fairly well bunched Right Bower revelled in the going. Acron finished well after a alow beginning. Solitaire n. had every chance. Tranquility appeared to break down hopelessly in the straight when challenging the loaders, and was pulled up, bitt he recovered after the race. Lady Court was never likely. Wasteland got completely left at tho start, and ran so well up at the finish that she would probably havo boen dangerous if she had got who had successively run second in the Pakuranga and Taranaki Hunt Cups, had a change of luck in the Manawatu Hunt Cup, but he had to bo desperately ridden to beat Acervate. Indeed, if AcervatVs ownerrider had been equal to his protessiona brethren throughout the running, he would never have been beaten. Winnagan and Acervate madp all tho running and in . the first round had a substantial lead from Trouble and Commentator. This lead was closed up entering the second circuit. £ lye furlongs from home, Commentator went, to the front. Acervate stuck to him and had him beaten at, the last fence, a Hurdle, and hero Commentator fell heavily. Trouble then came solidly and after a. desperate struggle got home by a long neck. \\ lnnagan, wno weakened badly over the coneluding stages, was u poor third, with Postman further back. Mangatapu fell six furlongs from home. Acervate was a good thing beaten. _ . , A Two-horse Contest

In a two-horse race for the Stewards Handicap, Chief Marionette was a better favourite than Taranto. They ran . together for five furlongs, with Taranto having the inside running, and he them drew away to score easily. Chief Marionette, ridden by an apprentice, made a creditable snowing for the opening of the season. , Park Acre endeavoured to win all tne way in the hack milo, but the favourite, ■Riotous, was never far away, and, challenging in tho straight, beat him veiy easily. Neither Flower nor Henry finished on as expected, after bnnig well placed on the turn. Jione of the others looked dnngeroiiß. The Ladies' Bracelet was not a race, but n half-mile sprint home. Hunting Boy. Platina and Acevvate ran bunched at a cant ring pace to the half-mile and then Hunting Boy clapped on the pace, holding his advantage to the post over the other pair, who Vind verv little between them. Patearoa made the pace for Juggle and Thrasher in the Levin Handicap but compounded at the distance wher« Juggle and Thrasher drew to the front.
