LOSS TO RACING
MR. GEORGE D. GREENWOOD DEATH AT AMBERLEY [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHUJRCH, Sunday Tho death occurcd this evening at his residence, Teviotdale, Amberley, North Canterbury, of Mr. Gcorgo Dean Greenwood, owner of Gloaming and many othei well-known racehorses. Mr. Greenwood was born in Yorkshire, and was the younger son of Mr. G. 0. Greenwood. He was a sheep-breeder and had farming interests in New Zealand, Australia and the Argentine. He was a founder of tho North Canterbury Farmers' Freezing Company, and was chairman for many years, having retired only Recently. Mr. Greenwood's interest in racing as an owner dates from 1908. Horses he owned won 12 Derby races in New Zealand and Australia. His most notable successes were the Jackson Stakes (Wanganui), ten times; tho Canterbury Jockey Club Challenge Stakes, ten times; tho Auckland Royal Stakes, six times; the Middlo Park Stakes (Canterbury), six times; the Hawera Stakes, six times; the Wellington Champion Plate, fivo times; the Auckland Jockey Club Craven Plate, four times; the North Island Challenge Stakes, three times; and tho Islington Plate, three times. Among the best-known horses Mr. Greenwood owned, in addition to Gloaming, were Biplane, Danube, Vice-Admiral, Bineta, Kibble, Nincompoop, and Honour. Mr. Greenwood was twice married, and is survived by his second wifo and two sons and one daughter.
