EMPIRE'S DEFENCE
STRENGTH OF THE NAVY " DANGEROUSLY LOW LEVEL" SYDN'EY, Aug. 16 The Melbourne correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald states that while Mr. S. M. Bruce is in London as resident Minister for the Commonwealth, it is likely that he will discuss with the British Government and the British Admiralty the question of the naval defence of the Commonwealth.
It is known that the views of, highlyplaced naval officers of Australia on the inadequacy of the Australian naval defences have impressed the Ministry. Early action may be expected to raise the present low-water mark of naval defence.
The speech of Rear-Admiral G. F. Hyde yesterday is believed to have expressed the views of the other members of the Naval Board. They feel that the naval forces of the Empire have fallen to a dangerously low level.
