YESTERDAY'S SALES RETURN ON INVESTMENTS Following is a list of yesterday's transactions on New Zealand Slock Exchanges. In tho second column is given the return, based on the last annual dividend, from | investment at tho quoted price. REVIEW OF THE WEEK FAIRLY ACTIVE MARKET MORE GENERAL DEALING Tho investment market ori the Auckland Stock Exchange was again fairly active throughout tho greater part of this week. Strong levels were maintained in rdl sections, and although a quieter tone developed toward tho clore, buying support remained firm. Supplies of Government loans were difficult to obtain at buyers ideas and dealing.in this class of investment was extremely light in comparison with the activity recently displayed. Only two transactions were recorded during the period, February, 1937, 5i per cent bonds and September stock changing hands at £lOl ss. Banks and insurance, particularly the latter, retained the strong interest which has been tho notable feature of the last few weeks. Although thero were no spectacular rises, trading was usually marked by a steady appreciation in values. Bank of New Zealands moved up from 46s 3d to 475, and New South Wales wero done a shade firmer at £26 lis 6d. Commercials of Australia, on tho other hand, gave way after touching 14s early in tho week to close on sale at 13s 10d. Now Zealands wore again tho active issue in insurance and levels advanced to 40s 6d, a rise of 6d. South British wero done at 54s 6d, a similar appreciation, but supplies were restricted. Auckland Gas and New Zealand Breweries also registered firmer levels and dealing look place in British Tobaccos from 28s to 28s 2d. A rise of 2s 6d look place in Colonial Sugars to tho final level of £4l 17a 6d. Farmers' Fertilisers hardened to 13s. For Wilsons Cements the market was easier, salo Is lower at 30s being followed by further weakness at tho close. A firnipr trend developed in mining toward the end of the week. DAMAGE BY LOCUSTS VICTORIA NYANZA SUGAR [by ti'i.egral'H—rnr,ss association] WELLINGTON, Friday A cable from the Victoria Nyanza Sugar Company's plantation, Kenya Colony, states that a recent visit from locusts resulted in extensive defoliation over approximately 1800 acres of next season's cane. Tho weather favoured a recovery. WILLOW FOR CHEESE CRATES Cheese crates made of willow timber are used to a large extent by dairy companies in South Canterbury, and with a view to reducing importations a start has been made in Tiinaru with the production of cheese crates from willow, transported into town from tho Raincliff estate. Commenced in a small way, the industry is new as far as Timjiru is concerned, and" the orders so far received are reported to be very encouraging. Up to tho present 60.000 ft. of crating lias been asked for, and it is anticipated that beforo the season closes the, demand in South Canterbury will bo increased to from 80,000 ft. to 100,000 ft.
